Measuring Completed Work: Baselines, Assisted Hours and Business Outcomes

A team can generate thousands of prompts without improving a single core process. Another uses AI rarely but saves hours in contract review. Microsoft increasingly measures Copilot value by completed work and assisted hours instead of activity. Its internal guidance recommends baselines for painful processes before the rollout. In this article, I describe a three-layer measurement model of adoption signals, time and effort indicators and business outcomes, and explain why role-based deployment makes value measurable.

Capability Expansion with Copilot: Judgment Gains Value

According to Microsoft's Work Trend Index, 66 % of AI users spend more time on high-value work, and 58 % produce work they could not have produced a year ago. For organizations, the question therefore shifts from task acceleration to capability expansion. AI takes over more execution. People set the intent, judge quality and decide what happens next. In this article, I explain why this model needs different metrics, workflows and management, and why judgment gains value as execution gets easier.

Microsoft Scout: From Episodic Prompts to Continuous Support

Most AI experiences at work are episodic. The user asks, the system answers, and the user carries the continuity: remembering the next step, reopening the file, rebuilding the context. With Microsoft Scout, introduced in June 2026, Microsoft adds an always-on personal agent integrated across the Microsoft 365 apps. In this article, I explain why persistent support can reduce the cost of restarting work, which governance questions arise and how Scout fits the sequence from answers to actions to presence.

Copilot Cowork: Delegating Multi-Step Work in Microsoft 365

#Microsoft365 #Copilot #AI #EnterpriseAI #Microsoft

The first phase of enterprise AI was session-based: the user asks, the system answers, and the user carries the work forward. Copilot Cowork takes over multi-step work. It builds a plan from a desired outcome, uses email, meetings, files and data from Microsoft 365, works in the background and asks for approval at checkpoints. Admins control billing, plugins, browser use and audit logs. In this article, I explain why this execution layer changes how organizations should measure AI value.

In-Chat App Execution: Shortening the Path from Answer to Action

AI now produces answers quickly. Finishing the actual work still means leaving the chat, opening another application and rebuilding context. Microsoft's April update for Microsoft 365 Copilot targets this gap. Agents connected to Adobe Express, Figma, Miro, monday.com, Box or Dynamics now appear directly in the Copilot conversation. Users can act there instead of switching tabs. In this article, I explain why this orchestration layer may matter more to enterprises than further gains in answer quality, and which governance questions IT has to settle first.
